ABOUT THE CENTER OdRaST

The green transition is one of the strategic priorities of the EU in the coming period, and sustainability is one of the key development principles. In order to contribute to the achievement of the sustainable development goals, to implement the knowledge and develop the need for life in the only possible acceptable way, the idea of establishing the Center for Transdisciplinary Promotion of Sustainable Development - OdRaST was born.

The OdRaST Center will promote the global sustainable development goals by connecting its three fundamental components: society, the environment and the economy, encouraging processes of awareness, reflection and efforts aimed at modern economic and social development in a protected environment.

TASKS OF THE CENTER OdRaST

The basic task of the OdRaST Center is to enable the promotion and realization of sustainable development goals not only through education, but also through the implementation of various activities of lifelong and socially useful learning, a transdisciplinary approach research, innovative and original projects, high-quality interactive forums among students and teachers of the Faculty , including employees of the University of Split. Special attention will be given to cooperation with local and wider community stakeholders, as well as experts of various profiles at the national and international level, with an emphasis on international cooperation with related centers and/or other institutions and faculties, which creates a basis for intellectual exchange and accumulation of contributions from different actors, disciplines, activities and institutions that see a certain problem from their own perspectives.

The establishment of the Center OdRaST is in line with the goals of the Development Strategy of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Split 2021-2025. and with the Strategy of the University of Split 2021-2025.

SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

The aspiration of modern society is to live in prosperity with economic development, respecting the needs of all people and preserving the environment, in other words to live in a sustainable way. The concept of sustainable development can be interpreted in different ways depending on the viewing perspective, therefore there are numerous definitions of sustainable development in literature and everyday speech. However, each definition has in common the term balance, which refers to "satisfying the needs of the present generation, without jeopardizing the ability of future generations to satisfy their needs."

The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, adopted by all United Nations Member States in 2015, provides a shared blueprint for peace and prosperity for people and the planet, now and into the future. 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are an urgent call for action by all countries - developed and developing - in a global partnership. They recognize that ending poverty and other deprivations must go hand-in-hand with strategies that improve health and education, reduce inequality, and spur economic growth – all while tackling climate change and working to preserve our oceans and forests.

1st International Scientific Conference “A Decade of Sustainable Development Goals (2015–2025): Reflections and Future Perspectives” — The Conference Was Successfully Held

At the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences of the University of Split, from September 25 to 27, 2025, the international conference “A Decade of Sustainable Development Goals (2015–2025): Reflections and Future Perspectives” was held, marking the tenth anniversary of the adoption of the Global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The conference brought together numerous domestic and international experts, scholars, researchers, institutional representatives, civil society members, and students to reflect on the past decade of SDG implementation and discuss future challenges and perspectives.

The event was organized by the Center for Transdisciplinary Promotion of Sustainable Development – OdRaST and the Center for Human Rights Research and Education, both within the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences of the University of Split. The conference was held with the strong support of the Faculty, which provided significant organizational and financial assistance, ensuring a high level of quality and international recognition of the gathering.

Over the course of three days, the conference featured plenary lectures, thematic sessions, round tables, and a poster section. Discussions focused on key topics such as:

  • achievements and missed opportunities in the implementation of the SDGs over the past decade,
  • the role of science, education, and culture in promoting sustainability,
  • climate change, biodiversity, and energy transition,
  • social justice, human rights, and inclusive policies,
  • future strategies for effective action beyond 2025.

A special contribution to the conference came from the pleasant and stimulating atmosphere, which enabled open dialogue and the exchange of experiences among participants. Alongside the formal scientific program, social gatherings and informal networking were also organized, further strengthening the spirit of collaboration and the creation of new partnerships.

Thanks to cooperation with the Tourist Board of the City of Split, participants had the opportunity to enjoy visits to the city’s cultural and historical landmarks, including Diocletian’s Palace and the Riva promenade. This gave the conference an important cultural dimension, while the hosts proved to be excellent promoters of Split’s and Dalmatia’s rich heritage.

The conference highlighted the importance of linking local and global initiatives and the role of universities in strengthening critical thinking, education for sustainability, and responsible social engagement. Particular emphasis was placed on the contributions of young researchers and students, as well as on the need for their active involvement in shaping sustainable policies.

Finally, the organizers expressed their sincere gratitude to all participants for their enthusiasm, commitment, and contribution to the successful realization of the event. Special thanks were extended to the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences of the University of Split for its organizational and financial support, without which this event could not have been carried out at such a high level.

It was concluded that, in the coming period, stronger efforts must be made to implement integrated approaches to sustainable development, linking academia, policymakers, and the wider public. The conference concluded with the adoption of recommendations and initiatives for continued cooperation at regional and international levels, thereby confirming Split as an important venue for dialogue on a sustainable future – and as a city whose charm and hospitality make every gathering unique.
